The 20 Best Films The Oscars Missed This Year

4. Blindspotting

Films set in Oakland was a big trend last year. In addition to being featured in Black Panther and Sorry to Bother You, real-life best friends Daveed Diggs (of Hamilton fame) and Rafael Casal showcased the city in the movie they co-wrote and co-starred in, Blindspotting. In addition to being absolutely hilarious, the film goes deep into conversations about race, police violence, PTSD, and cultural appropriation, and it does this without ever feeling like it’s trying to give you a sticky-sweet story about how we should all just get along.
