In 1984, ABC tapped Trebek to host a game show by the famous creator of Wheel of Fortune, Merv Griffin. The show was a revival of a popular trivia competition called Jeopardy! The first version of the show began in 1964 and ran for 11 years, but was canceled in 1975 when NBC yearned to appeal to a younger demographic.
