25. “Death and All His Friends” (Season 6, Episode 24)

Derek is in surgery after being shot by Clark. Cristina operates and orders Meredith to wait outside. We find Clark with a gun to Cristina’s head ordering her to stop operating on him and to let him die on the table like they did his wife. Meredith offers herself to the shooter but Cristina screams that she is pregnant. He ends up shooting Owen. Jackson fools Clark into thinking that Derek has flatlined and Cristina saves Derek. Clark shoots himself and Meredith has a miscarriage.

24. “Sanctuary” (Season 6, Episode 23)

Meredith is pregnant. Gary Clark, who blames Derek for his wife’s death, enters the hospital and shoots Reed in the head. He then shoots Alex. Clark asks Cristina where he can find Derek and responds with, “Have a nice day.” Derek orders a lockdown. Clark shoots Charles. Derek sees Clark and not realizing that he is the shooter, tells him to get to safety. Derek attempts to talk him down. April bursts out of Derek’s office and Clark shoots him.

23. “How to Save a Life” (Season 11, Episode 21)

You’re going to need a box (or seven boxes) of tissues for this episode. Derek is on his way to the airport and gets into a horrible car accident. He rushes to save the lives of those around him. After his patients have been taken to the hospital, he makes a U-turn to follow the ambulances when he is struck by a truck. He is brought to another hospital and cannot speak to tell the doctors that they are treating him all wrong. Derek dies and Meredith spends his last moments with him.

22. “Freedom: Part 2” (Season 4, Episode 17)

There are two new clinical trial patients, Beth and Jeremy, who fell in love after they met at a support group. Derek and Meredith sneak them into a private room to make love for the first time, after Beth’s parents disapproved of her and Jeremy’s relationship. Jeremy dies later on the OR table. Meredith lays candles around the patch of land where their house will be, a way to show Derek that she will trust him.

21. “Remember the Time” (Season 9, Episode 2)

The episode starts with a flashback to the plane crash. Meredith is freaking out in the hospital and searching for Derek. In the present, Derek and Meredith are having a fight about moving to Boston. Mark is in a coma and Arizona might lose her leg. Cristina is catatonic. Derek is left with only 80% functionality in his hand and talks Callie into giving him a risky surgery that could get him back up to 100% functionality.

20.“I Want You With Me” (Season 10, Episode 2)

Meredith is still in the hospital after giving birth. Bailey is operating on Richard. Heather Brooks dies and the team tries to comfort her grief-stricken mother with the same Jell-O story that Meredith told George’s mother when he passed away. Catherine wants Richard moved to a different hospital.

19. “Seal Our Fate” (Season 10, Episode 1)

Derek and Meredith have just had a baby. Arizona has just recently told Callie about her affair. Richard has been electrocuted in the generator room and Bailey is trying to locate him. There has been a mudslide and patients are pouring in. The fire chief who rushed to the scene of the mudslide dies and his wife is escorted to the hospital for a painful goodbye. There is still a man missing in the mudslide.

18. “Some Kind of Miracle” (Season 3, Episode 17)

It’s not looking good for Meredith. Cristina has a nervous breakdown and goes shopping at the 99 cent store. Burke finds her at a bar and tells her she should come back to the hospital and say goodbye to her friend. Meredith is in a state of limbo and Cristina tells her that she and Burke are engaged.

17. “Drowning on Dry Land” (Season 3, Episode 16)

In this episode, the doctors continue to help the ferry crash victims. Meredith is nowhere to be found. Izzie’s probation is lifted after she uses a power drill to alleviate a man’s cranial pressure successfully. Derek dives into the water that a little girl pointed at when he asked her if she had seen Meredith. She is pale, cold and not breathing. She is rushed to the OR to get her core temperature up and Derek and Mark wait patiently in the hall.

16. “Walk On Water” (Season 3, Episode 15)

Derek finds Meredith underwater in the tub and pulls her out. Although she is not trying to kill herself, her mother has said some pretty horrible things about her. Burke lets it slip to Derek that he is engaged to Cristina. Derek knows Meredith will be angry that she was not the first to hear the news of her best friend’s engagement. Meanwhile, a ferry has crashed and caught on fire. There are bodies everywhere and they race to save anyone who can be saved. A woman who is badly injured is frantically searching for her son.

15. “With You I’m Born Again” (Season 7, Episode 1)

After the mass murder at the hospital, the doctors must be evaluated by a psychiatrist before they can return to surgery. They are all suffering from PTSD. Derek is back after getting shot and is greeted by applause from his peers and promptly quits his job as Chief, giving Richard his job back. Cristina and Owen are getting married. Derek adopts a new “life is short” mentality after almost dying in the shooting. He is arrested for speeding and no one bails him out in order to teach him a lesson.

14. “As We Know It” (Season 2, Episode 17)

Bailey is refusing to give birth until her husband is by her side in the delivery room. George convinces her to give birth and the characters become much closer because of that moment. Burke and Meredith successfully remove the explosive device lodged into a patient’s body. They hand it off to Dylan and he takes it slowly to be neutralized. The bomb goes off and Dylan explodes right in front of Meredith. Izzie and Cristina take her into the shower to clean Dylan’s blood off of her. Derek comes by to check on Meredith after work and they have a meaningful conversation about the last time they kissed.

13. “It’s the End of the World” (Season 2, Episode 16)

Meredith cannot get out of bed. She is convinced that if she goes to work today, she will die. She was not far off. After a patient accidentally had some unexploded munition lodged inside of him while trying to make a homemade bazooka, a Code Black is called. Bailey goes into labor and her husband gets into a car accident trying to get there in time. Dylan, the leader of the bomb squad, wants to clear the OR of all unnecessary personnel, leaving Derek, Cristina and Meredith with the explosive patient.

12. “Stairway to Heaven” (Season 5, Episode 13)

A little boy needs a new liver and the doctors are doing all they can to make that happen. He is on an experimental new dialysis treatment, but if he doesn’t get a new liver in the next 24 hours, he will die. Serial killer William Dunn has caused severe damage to his body after attempting suicide. While in surgery, Miranda bursts in demanding that they let William die and use his organs for the little boy.

11. “What Is It About Men” (Season 8, Episode 4)

There has been a stampede at a comic book convention and the patients are … interesting. A man needs to have his ear completely reconstructed, but he ends up being more concerned about the fact that his buddy stole a Doctor Who tardis from him at the convention. Derek seems more concerned about the fact that the patient can’t feel his legs. He has an epidural bleed in his spine and Derek, Mark, and Jackson rush him into surgery.

10. “Song Beneath the Song” (Season 7, Episode 18)

This episode is a little bizarre since it is shown entirely through song. Arizona asked Callie to marry her and Callie was promptly struck by a truck. Callie is crashing in the OR, but her baby’s heartbeat can still be heard. Mark and Arizona attack each other verbally when trying to decided what is best for Callie, the person they both love so much. Callie opens her eyes after surgery and says “yes” to Arizona’s proposal.

9. “Adrift and at Peace” (Season 7, Episode 10)

Derek and Cristina go fishing, something that Cristina never imagined herself doing. A husband breaks his wife’s fall after they fell 100 feet into a ravine and is rushed into surgery from internal bleeding. Meredith and Owen clash during the surgery that was successful, but didn’t go smoothly. Callie ends up slamming the door in Arizona’s face after she left Africa to come back to her.

8. “Didn’t We Almost Have It All?” (Season 3, Episode 25)

Adele ends up losing her baby in the operating room and we learn that Richard was the father. This news seems to allow them to reconcile. Callie has been named chief resident and Bailey is shocked. Callie announces to George that she wants a baby and Izzie promptly informs him that she is in love with him. George doesn’t pass his boards and he must choose between interning again or quitting. Derek flirts with Meredith’s sister at a bar and she ends up being a new intern. Burke and Cristina are getting married. She has a panic attack and can’t walk down the aisle. Burke leaves her.

7. “Give Peace a Chance” (Season 6, Episode 7)

Derek and Richard have been fighting since the merger. Derek attempts to remove a tumor that Richard had deemed impossible behind Richard’s back. He manages to do it without paralyzing the patient. Lexie wears a diaper during the insanely long surgeries and Jackson mocks her decision by skipping fluids which leaves him unable to operate.

Derek has successfully removed Izzie’s tumor but she seems to be suffering from memory loss. George has joined the army and Bailey sets out to change his mind. A man is brought into Seattle Grace after jumping in front of a bus to save a woman he didn’t even know. Bailey knows if she accepts the pediatrics fellowship, her marriage will die. She turns it down, not to save her marriage, but because she will need time as a single mother.

5. “I Saw What I Saw” (Season 6, Episode 6)

There is a hotel fire and the doctors are scrambling to treat the plethora of new patients. There are people with third degree burns and even a firefighter with an axe stuck in his chest. Mrs. Becker takes a back seat as other patients need to be treated until her son screams, “Mommy can’t breathe!” She is intubated and at that moment Izzie decides to return Alex’s calls. Since the merger of the two hospitals, it has been chaos and this episode is a prime example of that.

4. “Fear (Of the Unknown)” (Season 10, Episode 24)

Cristina has been putting off her move to Zurich for some time now. She finally gets a European charger signifying she might actually be going. There has been an explosion at a mall and one of the patients is the suspect. Cristina and Meredith have a heartbreaking goodbye as Cristina takes a cab to the airport. Doctors try to locate a boy who is missing in the explosion.

There is a massive train crash and the victims are rushed to Seattle Grace. Two patients in particular have been badly hurt by being impaled onto the same pole. If they remove the pole, both patients will die. The doctors need to come up with a way to save them. Cristina is on a race against time to locate a patient’s leg.

Meredith, Cristina, Derek, Mark, Lexie and Arizona have been in a horrible plane crash. They must keep themselves alive and in turn, attempt to save the lives of others. Mark confesses his true love for Lexie right before she dies in his arms. As Meredith lights the last match they have, a gust of wind blows it out. They must fight to stay alive until help comes.

1. “Losing My Religion” (Season 2, Episode 27)

Someone has cut Denny’s VLAD wire and until the culprit fesses up, Richard makes the interns arrange a prom for his sick niece. Izzie ends up accepting Denny’s marriage proposal. Derek and Meredith need to make a decision about their dog, Doc. Callie aims to find out about George’s feelings towards her.
