Seau left the sport for good in January of 2010. Faced with life without football for the first time in nearly 30 years, Seau began to deteriorate. According to those close to him, Junior’s memory worsened and he became a shell of his former self. Around this time, CTE – a progressive degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive brain trauma – was beginning to be found in former NFL players.
