9. Annihilation
Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Oscar Isaac… what else do you need? Based on the science fiction book of the same name, the film follows a group of women who enter a quarantined zone of mutating landscapes and animals. The film was written and directed by Alex Garland, who also helmed Ex-Machina, another film in the “five-minutes-from-now sci-fi” realm. Like his other works, the film is thought-provoking in a way that will keep you debating what you just saw long after the credits end.
