20. The Hate U Give
Considering how much attention and news coverage there has been in this country about gun control and police violence, you could not have a more important or timely film than The Hate U Give. The film received great critical attention, but struggled to find an audience. It’s unfortunate considering how important the subject matter is and how adeptly it was told by screenwriter Audrey Wells, who passed away just prior to the film’s release. It is a must-watch for 2018, and if you have some extra time, maybe follow up by reading the book the movie is based on.
